Critique of one of Pete Souza's photos Go to Pete Souza's website http://www.petesouza.com/portfolio.html?folio=Image%20Galleries and select one of his photographs that catches your attention. In a Google Doc write a critique of the photograph. Turn your critique in to Classroom when complete.
Your critique must:
Describe the contents and context of the photograph (what's in it and what's the story that goes with it.) If you do not understand the story you should look it up. For example, I selected a photo (shown below) which had a caption that said it was from Obama's speech in Nairobi, which I knew nothing about. I did a quick Google search, read a short article, and figured it out. Therefore I might write:
The photo I selected is a close-up of a man's hands. He has written notes about President Obama's speech in Nairobi, Kenya such as "ethical," "media creativity," and "industrial." Upon review I learned that the President's speech included such topics as fighting terrorism and overcoming female oppression.
Describe the photographic techniques, compositional techniques, and editing techniques that you believe were used. Also discuss if you feel these were successful in creating a strong image. I might have written:
Pete Souza's photo is a close up using the technique of fill the frame. This leaves the man's identity to our imagination. It may have been shot with a telephoto lens so that the man didn't feel like Pete was too close and reading his notes. The photo has excellent contrast between the dark tone of his skin and the bright tone of his shirt. I think that Mr. Souza used levels to increase the contrast in the photo.
Describe your evaluation of the photograph. Do you like it? Why? Do you dislike it? Why? Does it tell a good story? Is it a good example of photojournalism or documentary photography? Why? For my photo I'd write:
I think this photo is very successful as a documentary photograph. All alone I don't think it'd be considered photojournalism, because you can't tell the whole story from the photograph. Within the context of other photos from the speech I think it'd work better to tell the story of the speech. I really like the high contrast and the close crop. I think it's an interesting way to tell us about what a president spoke about--to show a reporter's notes.
