For this project we will be focusing on portraits that relate to emotion. We will be using opposite emotions in photos to show a contrast.
An easy example would be say, happy and sad…. So you may want to brainstorm some more detailed emotions to try to get something a little more interesting than just a smile or a frown.
You will be taking head shot photos of your subject.
Before you start you may want to look in the mirror to practice facial expressions before you get in front of the camera. Take multiple pictures then you can pick two that work well and seem to show opposite emotions.
Try to stay the same distance for each photo so they are even and you will have less editing to do.
We will be printing both photos out and creating one image that shows each picture from a different angle, kind of like an accordion.
There will be more to this photo than taking a picture and sending it in. You will be using scissors, glue and folding to turn in a hands on final project.
Selecting emotions: There are alot of emotions (far more than just "happy" or "sad". If you need to take some time to brainstorm them and see the differences you can find when a person is experiencing that emotion.
Shooting: When you're ready to take your pictures you might want a list of different emotions to read from to make the process go quickly.
Below are some examples of of a photographer getting his or her models to give a variety of emotions for the camera. Also notice how every shot is the same distance from the camera. You will want to be that close or closer.
Editing: When you have two photos that have a good contrast in emotion edit each to accentuate the emotion they convey. Think about colors that relate to moods and editing styles that are more and less intense. You are welcome to edit each photo in a way that you feel best adds to your composition.
